Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Conditions
Psychiatry

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a common and often debilitating condition. Although frequently responsive to first-line treatments (cognitive-behavioral therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), it is nonetheless challenging to treat effectively. Furthermore, despite those that are helped by first-line approaches, there remains a substantial minority of cases in which the patient is helped little. Despite their efforts, patients report difficulties in finding clinicians familiar with OCD and its treatment demands. These issues raise the need for greater education of OCD within the mental health community. With the combination of its prevalence as well as its debilitating effects, educational opportunities for clinicians on issues pertaining to the nature of OCD itself, as well as on established first-line and evolving and emerging treatments would be of great benefit.
